Back in the days, when Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning launched ‘Napster’, it was a revolution for digital music and launched the internet into a new era. Many truly term it as the ‘birth of digital revolution.’ A new documentary which shows the journey of Naspter titled ‘Downloaded’ will now be premiered at SXSW Film Festival.
The movie is essentially meant to give a rather close look into the lives of both Parker and Fanning, showing how the two struggled with Napster as they had to take on multiple adversaries. The production also goes on to show that how the duo battled with music record labels who united their hands to take down Napster.
Alex Winters has directed ‘Downloaded.’ Winters is a rather well-known and award-winning director, having created a number of hit productions in the past. When asked as to why he thought it apt to create a documentary about Napster, he replied, “It’s about the music and the bands, the fans and the moguls, and the brilliant young minds that ignited the biggest youth revolt since Alan Freed hit the radio.”
The documentary is very significant since it directly related to digital music. Today we take digital music for granted but the fact remains that Napster was the turning point which marked the evolution of music from the realm of real CDs and storage mediums to the realm of digital. Winters has also hinted at the technologies that were used in creating Napster, in his documentary.
According to him, the very technologies that Parker and Fanning used in building Napster paved the way to the creation of many other forms of media and information distribution. Rather than sparking somewhat of a debate about it, Winters says that he rather aims to simply give a context to the digital music revolution. The documentary will be premiered at the SXSW conference this year.
