US Army smartphones have been certified by the cryptographers at the NSA, which would certainly help justify its $1,500 price tag and the handset’s display looks awfully similar to the Army’s Nett Warrior platform, an Android-based OS that features a host of mapping functions designed explicitly for war zones. Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross thinks that Apple could put Siri into the Apple TV or an Apple branded television and in related news, references to a new Apple TV have been found in iOS 5. Siri, an intelligent voice-controlled personal assistant which debuted with the iPhone 4S and if Apple were to bring the Siri functionality into their set top-box, they would need to issue a hardware refresh because the current-generation Apple TV powered by the A4 processor lacks oomph to run Siri……………………

iCloud.com is available to the public right now, the first volley into Apple’s cloud computing era and users who visit the site are urged to sign up or, if they already have one, convert their existing MobileMe account into an iCloud account. Those who attempt to do so are still being told that it’s not yet open to the public and only developers are allowed in and the primary iCloud component known as iOS 5 still lies in waiting. Unfortunately, for those who want to sign up, as previously stated you’ll have to wait until Apple releases iOS 5 later 12 October or Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2, the initial setup needs to be done on either of those two devices………………..

Microsoft aims to reduce heavy data usage for Windows users with the new Windows 8 operating system and the Microsoft Corporation has altered the memory system in Windows 8. In the latest Building Windows 8 blog, Bill Karagounis, group program manager for Microsoft’s Performance team, detailed some of the tricks that the company has employed in the new OS to optimize the use of memory and Windows applications can reserve multiple chunks of system memory, not just what for they need now but what for they may need in the future. Yet another trick was to find various core but low-level components that have been in Windows for almost 20 years and the new memory optimization should coax better performance out of PCs with an ample supply of RAM but also benefit those with only 1 or 2 gigabytes of memory………………..

Alibaba Group held talks with Singapore’s Temasek Holdings about providing financing so that it can buy out Yahoo and Temasek might help finance an offer in return for a bigger share in privately owned Alibaba. Temasek is uninterested in owning Yahoo and Yahoo’s 40 per cent stake in Alibaba may be worth about US$13 billion (S$17 billion).The Alibaba-Temasek arrangement would likely be part of a possible takeover bid for Yahoo! with private-equity firm Silver Lake and Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies………………..

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) announced yet another way BlackBerry smartphones will employ Near Field Communications (NFC) in the future to wirelessly share data with BlackBerry Tag and the service will allow BlackBerry smartphone owners with NFC-enabled devices to tap their handhelds together to share images, contact information, documents, website URLs and even add new BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contacts via NFC. Those crackberries equipped with NFC (Bold 9900 / 9930 and Curve 9350 / 9360 / 9370) will get BlackBerry Tag and RIM is planning to open up the relevant APIs so developers can use the facility in any number of interesting ways, like bringing touch-to-share to the system…………………

T-Mobile is expanding its efforts to let you call your Facebook friends for free with the launch of its new Bobsled VoIP apps on iOS, Android and the web. You can download the Bobsled app for iOS, even though T-Mobile doesn’t officially carry the iPhone! or Android and you can also call someone on Facebook who doesn’t yet have the Bobsled app installed.You can also go directly to leaving a voicemail without having to call and integrating with Facebook was a smart move on T-Mobile’s part, since Facebook has such a colossal user-base already—it gives the service instant usability…………………

Motorola has unveiled the ET1, a tablet created with the enterprise in mind and the tablet was constructed to offer more security and also sturdiness than a consumer tablet would need. It also features multi-user login options and enterprise applications for workforce and inventory management and the 1.4-pound ET1 features a 7-inch touchscreen and front and rear cameras. The ET1 boasts only WiFi connectivity, though Motorola Solutions’ Sheldon Safir says a Wide Area Network version is in the works and the manufacturer didn’t offer a specific price, but Safir tells Computer World that bulk purchases should cost less than $1,000 by the time the slab hits the market…………….

Netflix reversed an unpopular decision to put its DVD video rental business on a separate website and rename it Qwikster, saying both DVD and online streaming services will stay on the same website and U.S. customers will continue to go to Netflix.com for streaming and DVD-by-mail rentals. Apple fans are paying their respects to Steve Jobs by snapping up the iPhone 4S in record numbers around the world and first-day preorders of the iPhone 4S hit 1 million, easily besting the previous single-day preorder record of 600,000 set last year by the iPhone 4. The original guys in the luxury PC business, Computer Choppers have just unveiled the latest Diamond and Gold Plated Macbook Pro and this customised Macbook features 24 kt gold polished graphics as well as a VS diamond logo. The price isn’t listed, but we’d hold out until they replace those black plastic chiclets with something fit for the Diamond Princess………………..

Ultrabooks, Intel’s much-hyped alternative to the MacBook Air is finally reaching the market with Acer launching its first Ultrabook at $899 in US and Canada this week and his 2.98-pound aluminum beaut has a 13.3-inch (1366 x 768) panel is rated for six hours of battery life and promises to wake from sleep in a mere 2.5 seconds. While the 13.3-inch laptop boasts a Core i5-2467M processor, Intel’s integrated HD graphics and 4GB of RAM and Acer says additional configurations with larger solid state storage options will be available soon, but the pair apparently still provides two-second resume and speedy boot times………………..
