Auto Pan-Tilt Technology Let Cameras Track Fast-Moving Objects Automatically

It’s a bit hard to constantly follow a person or a dynamic object (such as a person, a moving vehicle and so on) while keeping it in focus during live shooting of events. Researchers have been doing hard work on this to develop such technology in video camera that will do this work accurately. Recently, researchers at University of Tokyo’s Ishikawa Oku Laboratory have developed a technology that can track fast-moving objects accurately while shooting. The technology is targeted to solve the problems of the camera operators in live broadcasting events who struggles to follow the moving objects or actors.

The technology for automatically following a dynamic object is called “1ms Auto Pan-Tilt” technology. Just like “auto-focus” in cameras that keeps an object in focus, this technology will automatically control the camera’s Pan-Tilt angles to keep an object always at the center of field. For example, using this technology, a high-speed object like a bouncing ping-pong ball in table-tennis game can be tracked. The ping-pong ball can be tracked at the center because of a high-speed optical gaze controller Saccade Mirror and a 1000-fps high-speed vision.

The Saccade Mirror controls a camera’s gazing direction not by moving the camera itself but by rotating two-axis small galvanometer mirrors. The researchers mentioned that the prototype of this technology is able to produce full HD image quality to provide the best broadcasting quality.
