Canonical Finally Unveils Ubuntu Phone OS For Mobile Devices

We recently reported that Canonical was hinting at a ‘touch-related’ release with a ticking clock on its website. The clock has apparently reached the mark and Canonical has released Ubuntu Phone OS, the Ubuntu iteration meant to run on mobile devices.

Ubuntu Phone OS

The mobile OS is already attracting raving reviews from different analysts. Canonical has taken a tad bit different approach to the development of a mobile OS compared to Android and iOS. The company has packed the Phone OS with its hallmark awesome functionality as well as great looks.

Ubuntu Phone OS is essentially quite different from other contemporary mobile platforms. The interface feels a lot more tidy and spacious as compared to Android and iOS. And Canonical has built the functionality of switching between apps with the help of horizontal swipes, making the whole process of interaction quite intuitive.

Ubuntu’s desktop version has always been known for an excellent search feature. Canonical saw to it that this advantage was translated into the Phone OS as well. In this new OS, you are able to get search results from multiple sources with a single search query. You also get to use voice commands and HTML5 apps.

The slight catch is that the company has no plans of shipping out a related hardware product any time soon, neither are there any hardware partnerships on the horizon. Without all that, Ubuntu Phone OS is simply an open-source mobile OS that can be run on a number of devices unofficially. Canonical did say that we may see a related hardware towards the end of 2014 but that’s a bit too late.

In a few words, Ubuntu Phone OS is very impressive work by Canonical. We weren’t expecting such a well-build and functional mobile OS from the company but it has certainly exceeded the expectations. However, it needs to do a lot more to make its new release a significant player in the mobile arena.
