Microsoft Stops HTC From Customizing Windows RT

It seems that Microsoft is following a rather closed strategy when it comes to its upcoming OS, Windows 8. This is manifest in the fact that Microsoft has refused to let hardware vendors tinker with the tablet version of Windows 8, called Windows RT. The result of this is that HTC has been rather severely reprimanded over its attempts to tweak Windows RT.

This is being done by Microsoft to maintain a definite and standard quality threshold for the entire Windows 8 experience, across all devices and machines which make use of Windows 8. It’s a great move since Windows 8, in itself, will be a huge step forward for Windows users. With its all new interface and a whole host of other features, users will take some time to adapt to it.

And if, at the same time, Microsoft lets vendors to tweak and change Windows 8, just like Google has permitted with Android, this may create quite a confusion for the users . It is for this reason that Microsoft has refused to let HTC change Windows RT build as is being reported by Bloomberg:

“HTC engineers wanted to build a Windows device with a customized home screen that would be distinctive to its devices, as manufacturers are allowed to do with Android. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft refused, said the people, and HTC was left off the list of companies the software maker provided with early versions of the software.”

Other factors too weighed in for this decision. For instance, Microsoft considered the sales volume of HTC devices which is not very appreciable compared to numerous other vendors.
