Microsoft efforts to bring Windows RT to mobile devices has not been very fruitful. Not only the common user seems utterly disinterested, even hardware vendors have shown little keenness in launching Windows RT devices. Samsung is the latest to ditch Windows RT by cancelling its plans to that end.
The South Korean electronics maker had earlier announced a tablet based on Windows RT. Branded as ‘ATIV Tab’, the 10.1-inch slate was meant to run on ARM-based processor. However, the company has had a change of heart.
It has now announced that after reviewing the demand for Windows RT devices, as indicated by its retail partners, the company has decided to shelve its plans of launching any Windows RT devices in the U.S. market. According to the Samsung executive who revealed this, a lot of resources would have to be wasted in order to educate the users about the significance of Windows RT. And Samsung is apparently not up for it, at least not at this moment.
The decision is nothing short of a significant blow to Microsoft’s Windows RT plans. Samsung is quite central when it comes to Android mobile devices, being the largest Android smartphone vendor. Samsung’s tablet sales have also been significant and its decision to ditch Windows RT means that Microsoft has lost a key ally on this front.
However, the company did say that in case Windows RT sales picked up in the future, it would be certain to reevaluate its decision. That doesn’t seem to be happening though, given the less than mild response of the market towards Windows RT machines.
