Back at E3 — after months of rumors and speculation — Sony announced that it was adding a paid service to its PlayStation Network arsenal. Called PlayStation Plus, this program would offer users free games and discounted content along with a slew of other offers.
After some time with the program, we wouldn’t call ourselves experts, but we do know quite a bit. Rather than sit on our wealth of hands-on knowledge, we want to share it with you. Below, you’ll find the most commonly asked questions about PlayStation Plus
What is PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation Plus is pretty much Sony’s take on a preferred shopper card. You pay for either a three-month or 12-month subscription and get free PlayStation Network games, PlayStation Minis and PSone Classics. On top of that, you get some freebies or discounts on games, avatars, themes and so on. Once you join, a golden plus-symbol pops up on your PlayStation Network name for your friends to see and you get to tell your PS3 to automatically turn on and update itself and its games. There are hour-long demos you can download, you get a subscription to Qore, and one day you might get into an exclusive beta.
How much does this cost?
A three-month subscription will set you back $17.99 (11.99 GBP) and a year will cost you $49.99 (39.99 GBP) – plus, the “year” subscription gets you an extra three months at the moment.
If I don’t renew my subscription, do I get to keep my free PlayStation Network games, PlayStation Minis and PSone classics?
Nope. If your subscription lapses, you lose all the free games you’ve downloaded.
What about the free DLC? If my subscription lapses, do I get to keep my add-on content?
Add-on content will remain if the subscription lapses.
Will I get to keep the games that were purchased at a discount if my subscription lapses?
Anything purchased — even at discount — will be kept if your subscription lapses.
If I earn Trophies on the free PSN games and then let my subscription lapse, do I lose the Trophies I earned?
No. Trophies earned will remain on your profile even if you don’t renew your PlayStation Plus account.
If I test one of these hour-long demos out (for instance Infamous) and don’t buy the game, do I keep the Trophies I earned during the demo?
No. To earn Trophies via Title Trial, the game must be purchased after the hour-long trial period.
Will discount cycles overlap or are these cycles very specific? For instance, if Games A, B and C are discounted one month, are they automatically put back to full price the next month while Games D, E and F are on sale?
Discount cycles could overlap. There’s no set rule.

Will there ever be some sort of extended calendar to let users know in advance what games will be free or discounted?
For the moment, Sony’s sticking with making announcements on the official PlayStation Blog as well as dropping sites like IGN a line.
If I buy a game one month and it gets discounted the next, will I get any money back?
