Real Football 2010 Review [iPhone]

FIFA world cup football 2010 is almost at the end but for those craving some more footie action Gameloft’s iPhone football game has been ported to the Android. This isn’t American football, this is real football (2010).

Real Football 2010 offers a list of features that wouldn’t sound unlikely for a full console game: Commentary, live local multiplayer, online leader boards, career modes. But the make or break point of a football game is how well it plays on the pitch and I’m happy to say that even with a couple of troubles Real Football 2010 is a lot of fun.

As with most Gameloft games your player is controlled via an on screen ‘joystick’ on the left half of the screen, while the right has a pair of buttons for pass/tackle and shoot/slide tackle. There are some more advanced motions that can be performed by swiping or performing a gesture, these are well explained in the tutorial and you rarely feel that you don’t have good control of your player and when you slam the ball in the back of the net after lobbing it into the box it feels more like ‘you’ achieved it, rather than some dumb chance, with the exception of the AI keepers.

The AI can be a little troublesome, at the easiest setting it becomes quickly obvious how to exploit it and at later levels your opponent’s skill in comparison to the incompetence of your own players can get rather frustrating as an attacker runs past your defenders who are far more content in picking their noses than having any drive to prevent the other team from scoring. These issues with a computer controlled player aren’t really exclusive to Real football and the solution in other games is generally is to play with another player but sadly this feature is only available locally and any online play is restricted to just comparing league tables.

The are a few other niggling issues, such as the limited vocabulary of the commentators but conversely there are a lot of great features such as replay uploading and a trophy reward system. For five dollars Real Football 2010 is a purchase that’s very easy to recommend to any football game fan, it’s never going to replace Fifa or PES on the consoles but if you want to get a quick fix of football on the go Real Football is five bucks well spent.

Real Football 2010 can be purchased direct from Gameloft at: http://www.gameloft.com/smartphone/real-football-2010/ with the price $4.99 under the publisher Gameloft.
