Android And iOS Grab 90 Percent Share Of US Smartphones Purchased In Last 3 Months

The market share of both Android and iOS combined is rapidly increasing in the U.S smartphone market. And this is happening at the expense of other smartphone vendors, especially RIM. According to a report about the US smartphone purchases made in the last three months, 90% of these devices were either Android or iOS.

The smartphone user base is rapidly expanding, as pointed out by this report. Currently, some 50% of US mobile users own smartphones which is a whooping 38 percent increase over last one year.

When considering overall market share, Android continues to lead the charge with its 48% share of the market. Apple’s smartphone, iPhone, is close behind with 32.1% of the share while BlackBerry is standing at an abysmal 11.6% which is not bad in itself but is rapidly shrinking in the wake of Android, iOS assault.

Even more interesting are the stats related to US smartphone purchases made within the last three months. 48 percent of these purchases were bagged by Android while another 43% went straight to Apple. This shows how fast the US market is becoming bipolar between Android and Apple, with the share of other smartphone vendors shrinking rapidly.

For instance, RIM and others combined, witnessed a 10 percent drop in their share in the smartphone purchases of last three months. RIM has gone down to 5 percent in the light of these figures.
