We have been hearing rumors about the possibility of Nokia launching an Android handset. The speculation is finally reaching its culmination as a new WSJ report claims that Nokia will finally unveil an Android smartphone this month.
Since its entry into the smartphone market, Nokia has forged an alliance with the Windows Phone platform and worked closely with Microsoft to make the platform a success. In the past, many have questioned Nokia’s wisdom of not creating an Android smartphone. These critics say that combining Nokia’s hardware with Android’s software prowess can be a winning recipe.
Perhaps the handset vendor has finally taken heed. Although there is no confirmation yet, numerous sources have cited that Nokia will be unveiling a low-end Android smartphone later this month. The handset will be meant for developing markets. And there’s the disappointing possibility that the users of the handset won’t be able to access Google Play store directly.
Rather, the handset will pack services from Microsoft and Nokia, such as Nokia’s Here Maps and Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Access to other popular mobile apps will be possible through Nokia’s own application store.
However, the device is apparently called Nokia X and will pack a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, together with 512MB of memory and 4GB of storage space. The display of the handset will be a 4-inch WVGA screen and it will come with a 5-megapixel camera.
If the rumors are to be believed, Nokia will unveil the handset at a press conference at MWC 2014 show in Barcelona on February 24. However, it remains to be seen how successful the strategy of embellishing an Android handset with a Nokia application store turns out to be.
