16 GB Playbook Shelved By RIM

RIM’s flagship tablet, Playbook, has pretty much been a flop since the very beginning. In fact of competition from iPad and other Android tablets, Playbook couldn’t gain traction and eventually, RIM tried to ship out the stock by bringing down the price of 16GB Playbook model to as low as $199. However, it seems that even that couldn’t lure the users and now, RIM has officially announced that it is abandoning the production of 16GB Playbook.

However, this does not mean that RIM will abandon the production of Playbook altogether. Rather, the 32GB and 64GB models of the tablet will continue to be produced and sold. Interestingly, it was the 16GB model that RIM was offering for $199 and now that this model is gone, one wonders what incentive will a prospective tablet user have in purchasing a Playbook.

Playbook has been facing a whole lot of problems right from the start, not to mention that it couldn’t even present a user experience as good as the now-obsolete Blackberry devices provided. Naturally, the first impressions from the tablet were abysmal and they pretty much sealed its fate, no matter how desperately RIM tried to overhaul the tablet and re-do its price tags.

Although when RIM released the 2.0 version of firmware, it did address many problems with the tablet so that Playbook was finally equipped with native calender and contacts apps, but even that couldn’t entice the users. In terms of sales, Playbook is nowhere in the tablet arena. It is being reported that RIM is planning a 4G LTE version of the tablet but what we fail to see  is that how does the company hope to sell it.
