Every year, the most pirated movies are usually the very same which enjoy mainstream popularity. However, according to a list of most pirated movies of 2012 compiled by TorrentFreak, Project X has lead the race this year, despite being a rather unpopular flick in the face of numerous other blockbusters.
Project X was probably the only surprise in this list. It was downloaded 8,720,000 times, and was followed closely by ‘Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ which was able to amass 8,500,000 downloads.
‘The Dark Knight Rises’ fell to the third place while ‘The Avengers’ reached the fourth position. Other movies on the list of top ten most pirated movies include ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.’
The fact that Project X was able to top this list does show that the popularity of a given movie title within the domain of piracy may not be synonymous to its success on the box office. Nonetheless, if a movie is a fair box office hit, there’s a huge chance that it will end up being pirated far and wide on the web. Again, that can’t always be the case – we saw what a smash ‘Hunger Games’ was in terms of its gross revenue but the film never showed up on this list.
The downloads statistics compiled by TorrentFreak come from public BitTorrents trackers alone, meaning that they may not represent the complete download counts of the individual titles. Still, this is a close estimate and thus, reliable.
