Facebook Trying To Bring Vevo On Board, Away From YouTube

Facebook has been talking to Vevo in an attempt to bring Vevo to it’s own social network. Vevo is a music-video service, currently hosted by YouTube. It has the second largest unique users online, second only to YouTube. Currently, Vevo still has one year left in the contract it has with YouTube. But reports indicate that Facebook is now trying to bring Vevo to Facebook as soon as it’s contract expires. The idea would be to create a Facebook, with Vevo, where people spend even more time.

Currently, Vevo splits the earning through advertisement it gets with YouTube. Facebook is interested in a similar settlement. Facebook has tried to take a number of measures to make it more music-relevant. First it launched Facebook Music which enabled the users to share their listening habits and tastes. Recently, Facebook introduced the ‘Listen With’ button which enables a person to listen song and share it with friends so that two or more people can listen to the same song, at the same time and chat about it. This applies to the subscribers of Spotify, Rdio and MOG.

Vevo definitely is a winner in both cases, if it sticks to YouTube or even if it jumps the ship and goes to Facebook. Currently, Vevo has a total of 43 million unique users, which puts it behind only YouTube which has 130 million unique users. Facebook may stand a real chance here because recording companies, which provide content for Vevo, have had a number of disagreements with Google and it’s policies. If Facebook makes a better offer on the point of policies, it may win the deal.

But the downside for Facebook is that the partnership with YouTube has proved very profitable for recording labels, despite the disagreements. So if Facebook really wants to seal this deal with Vevo, it may have to prove that Vevo can earn fine profits when it moves to Facebook.
