A big sunspot called AR1520 has unchained an X1.4-class solar flare on July 12 at 16:53 UT. The X-class solar flare is supposed to be geoeffective and concerned the space weather experts. The blast has thrown a wave of solar plasma also known as Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) directly toward our planet and it will spur a geomagnetic storm over the Earth. According to forecasts, the solar storm is supposed to hit the Earth today. Experts are expecting minor to moderate impacts on satellites and communications due to the solar flare.
According to a forecast track that is prepared by space weather experts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will hit Earth on July 14 (that’s today) around 10:20 UT (+/- 7 hours) and will spur a geomagnetic storm over the weekend.
The confusion is, two different government agencies have issued two different forecasts around the event. Acknowledging the confusion, Popular Capital Weather Gang series writer Jason Samenow said, “I’m sure that, if federal experts really were expecting severe impacts from this event, they’d be letting everybody know in no uncertain terms.” Let’s hope, he is right.
