Engineers Trying To Make A Motorcycle Helmet That Can Navigate

A motorbike helmet can save our head during accidents. But a team of Russian motorcyclists-slash-engineers is trying to make such helmet that will not only be able to save our head during accidents but also will be able to navigate.

Moto Helmet

The helmet is named LiveMap. This helmet will be slightly larger than a regular helmet and it will weigh 2.2 pounds. The helmet will be constructed out of carbon fiber, which is stronger than steel and very light.

LiveMap Helmet

According to LiveMap, the helmet’s battery will last 8 hours and can be charged like most wireless devices today, via USB cable. It will come with voice control, a digital compass, and a light sensor that adjusts display brightness depending out whether it’s dark or light out.

User Interface Of LiveMap

The LiveMap will be able to display full-color, translucent images and text right on the visor. The visor will only display an overview map if the bike’s speed is close to zero.

User Interface Of LiveMap Helmet

Riders will be able to check their speed, view the time, and get directions, all without taking their eyes off the road. The helmet will also come with some smart safety features.

At present, the features that the Russian motorcyclists-slash-engineers plan to implement are:

  • augmented reality for easy and user-friendly navigation
  • clearly visible collimated image i.e. it is always in focus, just like that in scope sights
  • full-color, translucent picture is projected right on the visor like in a F-35 fighter helmet, it’s safe, provides unobstructed view, doesn’t distract attention and eliminates the need for a separate display
  • supposed size of the system fits a motorcycle helmet – our helmet is going to be just a bit bigger than usual
  • two 3000 mAh batteries for a long operation time
  • microphone for voice control that keeps both hands free for driving
  • two earphones
  • light sensor for adjusting the image brightness according to external light conditions
  • G-sensor, gyroscope, digital compass for head movement tracking (the picture changes according to the view direction)
  • our own minimalistic interface that will be used instead of standard Android interface. Thus you will not be able to play games or watch video on the go, sorry!

Here’s a somewhat-hilarious video of the helmet in action:

The LiveMap helmet’s creators are hoping to raise $150,000 by July 12 through Indiegogo crowd-funding website. The helmet will be sold for $2,000. But those who will pre-order the helmet through Indiegogo campaign will be able to get it for $1,500.
