Google May Beat Apple In 3D Maps

It has been recently reported that Apple has plans of introducing 3D maps of its own in iOS 6. Analysts stated that this was being done by Apple to let iOS users move away from Google Maps. However, it would seem that Google may beat Apple in 3D Maps. The search giant has now unveiled plans of introducing 3D Maps soon.

On June 6, Google is bringing together an event which is called ‘The next dimension of Google Maps.’ Evidently, this is a clear indication to the ‘third dimension’ and shows that Google is very probably aiming at unveiling its own 3D maps.

The invitation that Google sent out for this event read, ‘At this invitation-only press gathering, Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps and Google Earth, will give you a behind-the-scenes look at Google Maps and share our vision. We’ll also demo some of the newest technology and provide a sneak peek at upcoming features that will help people get where they want to go—both physically and virtually. We hope to see you there.”

Interestingly, WWDC 2012 is due to happen within two weeks. And Google has scheduled this event right before Apple’s big day, the conference where Apple has conventionally unveiled a lot of new things.

One of the chief interests that Google has in keeping relevant to iOS users is that Google earns hefty sums by licensing its software to Apple for iOS devices. This sum is even more than what Google earns from Android. Naturally, if Apple edges Google out of its equation, Google will suffer huge losses. And by introducing 3D maps of its own, Google is making itself indispensable.
