Facebook recently launched the Gifts app which allows users to send each other real gifts. The service has been offered to a limited number of users so far. The company has now rolled out invites for an official Gifts event scheduled for November, which may mark a more wide-scale offering of the Gifts app.
The Gifts app is a huge step forward for Facebook because it marks the entry of the social network into online retail. Until now, you could send virtual gifts to friends on Facebook but now, you can send them real gifts. The recipient of the gift is notified when you send him a gift and he is then able to customize the gift to his liking.
Naturally, Facebook doesn’t ‘create’ the gifts but simply offer products by other vendors. However, the packaging of the gift is done by Facebook. The company has now rolled out official invites to an event scheduled in NYC on November 1st.
The invitation reads “You = Invited” and in the background, you can see the knot of a gift’s wrapping. At the bottom of the invite, it says, “You’re invited. Come see what’s new with Facebook Gifts.”
The Gifts app by Facebook is available only to a limited number of U.S. users for now. It is possible that the social network was testing how well it can handle actual gifts and now that it is through the testing phase, it may be planning a more wide-scale rollout of the service during this event.
