Most of us remain informed of the birthdays of our friends through Facebook – there’s no more convenient way to be alerted of so many birthdays at just the right time. Facebook now apparently tends to cash on this by offering real-life presents which can be sent through the social network.
You can finally stop sending your friends all those virtual flowers and cards and can rather send them real presents. This is now possible through the ‘Gifts’ application which Facebook has rolled out to a limited number of U.S. users.
Through this app, you can select presents from a large range of choices. The list includes gourmet ice cream, organic dog toys, spa packages, bakery items and a lot more.
The best part about sending presents through the ‘Gifts’ app is that the recipient will be notified of it on Facebook. He can then view the details of the present and even tweak it to his liking. For instance, if you are sending your friend a cupcake on his birthday, he can open the Facebook notification and choose his favorite cupcake flavor.
One can even trade the gift for some other Facebook gift according to one’s preference. Once he is done with finalizing the present he has been sent, he can provide the billing address to which it should be sent.
While the items themselves are from other vendors, the packaging will be done entirely by Facebook, complete with Facebook stickers, wrapping and a real notecard. This marks the social network’s first step into online retail and if Facebook is able to pull it off well, it can translate its near-billion users into a new and lucrative cash stream.
