Looking for a netbook with a little more oomph, or perhaps a thin-and-light laptop that doesn’t break the bank? We’re not quite sure which category the Acer Aspire 1551-5448 falls under, but we reckon it’s liable to satisfy both camps with an 11.6-inch LED-backlit display and a 1.5GHz AMD Turion II Neo K625 CPU. Like the single-threaded Aspire 521 and 721 cousins we’ll be reviewing later this week.
Available in the US for about $550, the Acer Aspire 1551 features a 11.6″ CineCrystal HD (1366 x 768) TFT display with LED backlighting, a 1.5GHz AMD Turion II Neo Dual-core K625 CPU or 1.30GHz AMD Athlon II Neo Dual-Core K325 CPU , ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 GPU (with 384MB dedicated memory), up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 320GB of SATA HDD (5400rpm), Windows 7 Home Premium OS, 5-in-1 card reader, three USb 2.0 ports, VGA, HDMI port with HDCP and a Crystal Eye webcam with 640 x 480 resolution on online video calls. It is capable of Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/Draft-n, Gigabit LAN and weighs just 1.4 kg with six-cell battery and has a 5-hour battery life.
This is the sort of spin NVIDIA is known for, and it’s something that enthusiasts hate. At a guess, this is less about GPU performance and more about battery life. AMD continues to come up short compared to Intel on battery life; downclocking the GPU by 120MHz probably saves a few watts here and there. We like the Aspire 1551, at least on paper, but we’d be happier if AMD didn’t resort to using this sort of tactic. At best, it makes a company look sly and underhanded.
The €499 model packs 2GB of RAM and a 1.3 GHz Turion II Neo X2 K325 processor, while the €599 version has 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth, and a 1.5 GHz Turion II Neo X2 K625 chip.
