Facebook has a knack of regularly dishing out new features. The latest from the social network is ‘Recommendations Bar.’ Facebook announced the new feature in its developer blog, and is styling it as a social plug-in. This essentially means that the social network will suggest content in the recommendations bar based on what others, in your social circle, are viewing.
The new feature essentially lets a user discover what articles are popular among his/her social circle(s). Based on the popularity of these articles, if you visit a page with the feature enabled, you will see a small window at the bottom right of the page. In this windows, the recommended articles will be displayed.
A number of very popular sites, such as Mashable, have already integrated the feature in their sites.
To enable the feature on a website or a page, all you need to do is copy and embed a few simple lines of code. The feature is also available for WordPress sites through the Facebook for WordPress plug-in.
The best thing about the feature is that not only does it prompt a user to read other articles when visiting a specific site, it also publishes popular articles on a website back to the Facebook Timeline. This enables other users to see them on Facebook and then redirects them to the actual website, thus bumping its traffic significantly.
