Intel Atom chips aren’t exactly as popular as they were before the onslaught of tablets and ultrabooks. Besides, not many people are any longer interested in the idea of netbooks. However, your interest may be piqued if you were told that Intel is possibly working on a 22nm single fanless quad-core chip with on-board Ivy Bridge graphics.
This information comes from alleged leaks, so this can’t be said for sure. To be precise, this has been divulged from a leaked presentation on a 22nm chip that Intel is planning on releasing in 2013. The presentation talks about a fanless Valley View system which will have up to four cores, 8GB of RAM and up to whooping four times the graphical performance of the earlier Atom chips.
This does seem to make sense especially since Intel engineer Jesse Barnes stated, ‘ValleyView is a CedarView-like chip but with an Ivybridge graphics core.’
Two rather reliable sources, one an official Linux push driver from Intel; and the second, a leaked road map from Advantech, point to this. And although we still can’t deem it a done bit of information, it would be logical that if Intel does intend a release on the Atom line-up, it would be a really powerful chip with quad-core graphics at its heart.
