Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it would shut down the Games for Windows Live marketplace on August 22. But now it seems like Microsoft has planned to shut down the entire Games for Windows Live service. Microsoft support page hints that the company will shut down Games For Windows Live on July 1, 2014.
Microsoft posted the following update on the Age of Empires Online support page on Xbox.com, but later removed it.
Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.
As the update said, gamers would be able to “continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100 percent operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.” But, we don’t exactly know what will happen after that.
We don’t know exactly why Microsoft pulled the message from the support page, but it simply could have been posted prematurely or by accident, with an official announcement possibly coming in the near future.
