Ouya Kickstarter Campaign Raises A Massive $8.5 Million

We reported earlier that gamers around the world were lining up to back the Ouya Kickstarter project. The project envisions an Android-based open-source game console and was immediately a hit. It started off with a target funding of $950,000 and by the end of the campaign, it has been able to raise a lot more than that.

The last time we reported about this project, it had already raised $2 million, well beyond its target. And now, 28 days later, with the deadline here, the total funding that the project has been able to attract mounts up to a whopping $8.5 million!

In fact, the target funding was achieved by the Ouya campaign within first eight hours of its launch. The design of the console has been presented by Yves Behar and it carries a very attractive price tag of a mere $99. Initially, there was a doubt among gamers that whether or not such an Android-based console will be able to get gaming titles from notable game developers.

These doubts were soon dispelled when Yves was able to bring a number of notable people and organizations on board with him. These include Muffi Ghadiali who had worked on the Amazon Kindle as well as notable game developers such as Square Enix and Namco Bandai. In fact, the game studio, Robotoki, also announced that the first game from the studio, a prequel to ‘Human Element’ will be launched on Ouya.

Naturally, all these additions to the resources of Ouya look very lucrative to an average gamer who not only will be able to get a $99 console but will also have a lot of big titles to play on it. The console is, by no means, of a poor quality and features a Tegra 3 quad-core processor together with 1 GB of RAM, 8GB of flash storage and HDMI connection with 1080p content support.

With such impressive specs and the whole philosophy of open-source behind it, it is not surprising that Ouya has received such an overwhelming response from the users.
