How many hours have you spent watching television this week? Can’t remember? Okay, an easier question this time. Did you spend more time watching television or watching online videos last week? If you are a tech savvy person, then you undoubtedly spent more time watching online videos. If you’re a bit of old school, then you have resorted to traditional television. How did I know? The infrographic below told me.

Death of television

AccreditedOnlineColleges.com has published an amazing infographic showing how traditional television or the “idiot box” is dyeing, and online video is taking its place. Over one-third of Americans now watch videos online every day. And, those streamed videos are not for fun only; millions of students now receive online video education every day, thanks to the likes of, including, Khan Academy.

Viewers watch 239 videos online per month on average. And the top traffic earning sites are Netflix, YouTube, Tudou and Hulu; where Netflix engages more than three times the viewing hours per user than its closest competitior YouTube.

The traditional television channel owners, however, have something of hope. Most students, and people of all ages, spend more time watching TV shows online than ever. Among the total populace, students are 3 times more likely to watch videos (or content) on their laptops than on cable. As such their liking of online videos that TV shows equivalent to 1 billion hours have been watched on Netflix in June 2012 only; a first for any such site.

The need for television to watch content is decreasing every year. In 2006, about 63% Americans felt the need to own a TV set. This percentage has sunk to 42% this year. Now, it’s the computers people can’t live without.

The relatively new technology of online video streaming, introduced a decade ago, has been taking the place of television, that needed 80 years to reach an average of 290 American viewers. The rapid adoption of new technologies is going to make many such technologies as TV out of context in future.
