Hybrid cars are all about fuel efficiency, not speed; because the latter function is often fuel hungry. That’s why, the hybrid cars don’t seems to be speedsters. But the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid has proved that wrong. The hybrid sedan has hit 185.394 mph (298.363 kph), the fastest ever achieved by a hybrid car, in the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.
The Jetta Hybrid set the record in Bonneville Salt Flats as part of Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) annual Speed Week. The sedan was driven by Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago. The car was modified to conform to SCTA regulations and salt racing safety norms.
The production version of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid has “150-horsepower, 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder TSI® gasoline engine with a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission and an electric motor that adds an extra 27 horsepower.” The all new hybrid sedan will be available in the US later this year.
