Biometric identification modules are gaining traction all around the world, given the fact that they tend to be one of the most secure and reliable identification methods. While many countries have already implemented such a system, and many other are in the process of doing so, UAE seems to hold the largest biometric database in the world.
This much has been announced by Emirates Identity Authority. The claim emanates from the fact that Emirates ID’s biometric database currently holds more than 103 million digital fingerprints as well as over 15 million digital facial recognition reports.
This, Emirates Identity Authority announced, is the largest set of biometric data held by any country. According to a spokesperson of the authority, “We have made worldwide surveys and enquiries with the similar official authorities and agencies of the world governments holding such databases and confirmed that our database is the largest.”
The authority is now in the process of having this achievement certified as a world record by the World Record Academy but hasn’t applied for a Guinness World Record since such a category doesn’t exist yet.
The Emirates authorities say that they were able to bolster their overall database by implementing a new strategy in 2009 which doubled the number of registered records. UAE envisions bringing all its citizens under the fold of digital identification eventually, something that the authorities believe will significantly contribute to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
A full-scale biometric identification system will also ensure that identity theft and the crimes related to it are contained to a minimum.
