With the blessings of technology, all major car makers are now tending to make self-driving cars (autonomous cars). Jeffrey Miller, IEEE member and associate professor of computer systems engineering at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, believes that by 2040 most of the cars will be autonomous.
According to Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) predictions, by 2040, 75% of the cars on road will be autonomous. We have already seen Google’s autonomous car has completed an aggregated distance of 300,000 miles without any accident.
But, Google cars not the only one in the autonomous car space. Dr. Alberto Broggi, IEEE senior member and professor of computer engineering at the University of Parma in Italy explained how the Google cars being tested were equipped with precise maps nad LIDAR technology based sensing, the cars tested “on the route from Parma to Shanghai had no maps, and had sensing primarily based on cameras. In both cases, the cars have no help from the infrastructure.”
But the issue is, there is no guarantee that autonomous cars won’t fall into accident. The question is, “how is it possible to legally resolve a complicated accident involving a self-driving car?” And, how will a car chose between options where every action may take a life.
According to Broggi, “Autonomous cars alone will bring limited benefits. They would be able to locate obstacles, avoid them and follow the road. But efficient autonomous operations would also require that vehicles coordinate with each other.”
But still if an autonomous car causes an accident, then who are we going to blame? Will we blame the driver (who can drive, but at that time not driving) who has no role in how the car drove? Or, the car maker or software maker company whose system was not well enough? Or some other party? That questions lead us to thnik about these inevitable issues.
GM’s Cadillac division is expecting that by 2015, they will produce autonomous cars at a large-scale ad. That’s not all. The company also believes that they will have fully autonomous cars available by the end of the decade. On the other side, Audi and BMW have their own self-driving car concepts. But above all, popularity of these autonomous cars will be depending on general public’s acceptance.
