And now, as per the reports from IDC, Apple has become the third-largest phone manufacturer. Nokia is still on the top while Samsung is close behind. But Nokia’s share in the global mobile phone market is diminishing very fast and the pace at which Apple’s yearly shipments have increased, we can expect Apple to become the top vendor very soon.

The pace of cellphone market has certainly reached a point where higher-specs devices are being achieved every new day. Smartphone have particularly revolutionized it all. However, there is still the charm of a cellphone that comes by cheap, performs the very basic functions of a cellphone and is small in size. For such ties, BenQ-Siemens comes in quite handy.

Nokia’s Lumia has gained widespread acclaim for being very competitive and aesthetically cool. The hype is particularly high about Nokia Lumia 900 which is to hit the markets sometimes later in this year. However, a surprising piece of news is that a Dutch retailer, Typhone, has put up an image of Nokia Lumia 910 on it’s website, claiming that the device will soon be available in Netherlands. The only different between Lumia 900 and Lumia 910 is that the latter doesn’t support LTE and has a 12-megapixel rear camera, compared to the 8-megapixel camera in Lumia 900. Can this really be true?

Apple and Samsung are two of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world. Apple prizes it’s iPhone while Samsung has pretty much succeeded with it’s Android smartphones in the Samsung S series. Last year, Samsung momentarily overtook Apple in smartphone sales but with the results of the final quarter out, Apple is back in the game and leading. Samsung’s quarterly reports tell that it sold 36.5 million smartphones in Q4 whereas Apple has sold about 37 million, clearly on the first position, again.

Microsoft is relying heavily on Nokia to roll out it’s Windows Phone devices and to make these devices a success. This was evident when at CES 2012, Microsoft officials actively supported Nokia Lumia presentation. According to the quarterly report released by Nokia, it has been handed out a $250 million payment, which is a first in the series of payments as ‘platform support payments.’ While the term is vague, it shows that Microsoft’s stakes are high in Nokia Lumia sets and the software giant really wants them to succeed.

Nokia was once the leading vendor in the world of mobile. But since the inception of iOS and Android smartphones, Nokia has gone somewhat down in the market. But that still can’t blur the fact that Nokia is still shipping millions of handsets and is a very strong contender, now that it is back with Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia announced on Wednesday that it had sold the 1.5 billionth Series 40 OS handset. To commemorate the 1.5 billionth sale, a ceremony was held to honour the buyer. This is perhaps Nokia’s way of telling the world that it still has the potential to lead, compared to Apple’s gross sales of 183 million iPhones since 2007.
