Android market share grew steadily since the platform was launched three years ago and now Google conquered reached a new milestone. As Andy Rubin, SVP of Mobile and Android head announced on his Twitter page late on Tuesday, Google can now show off impressive activations figures. The number of Android devices activated each day now reached to more than 700,000. “For those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service,” explained Andy Rubin.
AppleInsider reports that Rubin’s recent declaration goes to show how Android became increasingly popular this year. The last time we found out about daily Android activations, was in Jully when Google announced 550,000 devices running its OS subscribe to networks each day. This number revealed at the time 50,000 more units than Rubin announced a month earlier.
As smartphone market share is concerned, Google has a very comfortable position with 53% Android powered handsets. By comparison, the main rival Apple and its iOS only has 29% share of this market, as revealed by studies on the first three quarters of this year. In the same time frame, Apple won the tablet market with its iPads representing 61% share.
However, after the holiday quarter Apple might see its tablet market share drop, on account of pent up demand caused by the upcoming next generation iPad, three months from now. At the same time, Android tablet army got a new leader Kindle Fire which is already a commercial hit with appealing features and friendly price tag, not to mention Amazon’s full retail power behind it.
