Official PlayStation App Coming to iOS, Android by Sony

PlayStation’s official blog has announced that they’ll be releasing an official PlayStation application for both Android handsets (with a minimum of Android 1.6) and iOS with version 4 and above. The service will be available on both iOS and Android, although the app will be limited to the following countries: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. SCEA is promising more countries will be added next year, although there are no details on exactly which countries that will include, or if the U.S. will ever be added to that list.

In version 1.0 you’ll be able to:

* Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
* Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
* Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
* Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

The biggest feature that comes to mind when you hear ‘PlayStation’ is not there; as of now Sony hasn’t announced plans for users to play games with this app. Instead, this is more of a gateway to the social landscape of PlayStation Network.

Besides adding another major corporate entity to kneel to the power of the App Store, this also marks the first time that Sony has brought their PlayStation branding into the smartphone arena. Sony starting to dip its PlayStation branded toes into the great smartphone ocean concurs nicely with the recent rumors of the Android-powered PlayStation Phone.
