Ever since the recent release of evasi0n, the tool that allows untethered jailbreak of iOS 6 devices, millions of users have flocked to the software and jailbroken their iPhones and iPads. Interestingly, this has also resulted in a huge surge in the monthly user base of Cydia’s iOS 6 users, which has just hit 14 million.
Cydia is the most popular alternative marketplace that is available to iOS users. Although Apple restricts the iOS users to its own marketplace, App Store, users can break of that restriction by jailbreaking their devices.
Until recently, iOS 6.x users had no way of jailbreaking their devices since no jailbreak tool was available. With the release of evasi0n, these users finally had a way to accessing Cydia and reaching out to the huge repository of usually-free content that is offered by it.
Now, it has been revealed that the total number of iOS 6.x users who have joined Cydia has reached 14 million. This can certainly be attributed, in part, to evasi0n. The jailbreak tool was downloaded by more than 7 million users within four days of its release. By now, many more millions of users must have downloaded it and jailbroken their iOS 6.x devices. The total number of Cydia users has now mounted up to 23 million.
However, the fact remains that Apple has sold a lot more iOS 6.x devices and in comparison, the number of iOS 6.x users who have joined Cydia is still substantially low. And this number could get lower still as Apple works diligently to work on patches for exploits which are utilized by evasi0n to accomplish the jailbreak.
