iPhone Were 84% Of All Smartphones Activated By AT&T During Q4

During the final quarter of 2012, Apple was finally able to reassert its solid dominance in the smartphone market, thanks to the launch of iPhone 5. AT&T has now crunched its numbers and the carrier has revealed that of the total smartphones it activated during 2012, 84% were iPhones.

AT&T

In terms of number, AT&T activated a whopping 8.6 million iPhones during the fourth quarter. In total, the carrier activated 10.2 million smartphones during the same period. These numbers were revealed by AT&T as part of its quarterly earnings call.

Apple suffered a slight dip during the second and third quarter of 2012, registering a rather dull growth rate of iPhone sales. That, many analysts pointed out, was probably due to the fact that prospective iPhone buyers were waiting for the new iPhone 5 which was yet to be launched back then.

This proved rather true because as soon as Apple launched iPhone 5, iPhone sales instantly went sky high. AT&T won over Verizon by selling 2.5 million more iPhones during the fourth quarter of 2012, effectively making it the most successful carrier in terms of iPhone sold. At the same time, AT&T revealed that it activated a record number of Android devices during the same quarter.

Despite such excellent sales, the carrier register a quarterly as well as annual loss. The annual loss clocked at $3.9 billion, significantly trimmed down from the $6.7 billion annual losses registered a year ago, thanks in part to the iPhone sales.
