Boeing Jumps The Smartphone Bandwagon With Plans Of An Android Phone

The smartphone market has been booming and expanding exponentially. And a number of rather unexpected vendors have jumped the bandwagon in a bid to be a part of the reaping. Now, we have been told that the aerospace giant better known for making planes, Boeing, is all set to unveil a highly secure Android phone of its own.

So why on Earth Boeing thinks that it can compete in the smartphone market? Well, first, the company is not developing just any Android phone but one which will be highly secure. According to Boeing, similar devices from other vendors are being offered for as high as $15,000 to $20,000 because these vendors use proprietary software. Boeing, on the other hand, has plans of offering its phone for much less.

According to president of Boeing Network and Space Systems, Roger Krone, ‘We are going to drive down towards a lower price point, but … not mass-market price point.’ This means that the device will definitely be more pricey than our regular iPhone, Blackberry and other Android devices.

The price may not hurt Boeing in the competition since the audience Boeing intends to target with its ‘Boeing phone’ is not the average consumer. Rather, it has plans of attracting the intelligence industry and the defense sector as is manifest in Krone’s words, ‘We believe that there is significant interest in the defense side as well as the intelligence side and in the commercial world as well.’

Given the increasingly greater dependence of the aerospace industry on technology, it seems quite natural that Boeing has decided to take up the venture. Holding up his smartphone, Krone said, ‘We are all living off this thing. And we’re not going back. In fact the next one I have is going to be thinner, smaller and have more capability.’
