[Tutorial] Five Things You Must Do Before Selling Your Smartphone

So you are planning on getting a new handset and are worried how to make the switch? No need to worry. The tips given below will help you make a smooth transition without having any headaches about your data, its backup and other usual issues.

Smartphones

Before anything else, you need to know how critically important a used cellphone is. It contains your data, your contacts and a lot more, so just tossing it away for some price means you risk putting all of that in the hands of a complete stranger who can then misuse it in a number of ways. Now that you know that, let’s see how we can secure your data before you buy that shiny new smartphone.

1. Secure your contacts:
Since the very purpose of a smartphone mostly is to stay in touch with other people, your contacts are probably the most precious thing on it. So you need to take care of them first. Here’s the best part: it’s really easy. If you have an Android handset, make sure you have synced it with your Google account. That way, an automatic backup of all your contacts is created. Gmail will even snag away and save your calendar details.

2. Shifting the contacts and calendar details:
Similarly, if you have an iPhone, use your Apple ID to sync your contacts with the account. Now, if you are moving from Android to Android, it’s really very easy. Normally, you just need to push the data across the handsets and it’s done – as simple as that. If the new Android handset is particularly problematic about it, sync your Google account with it and get all the contacts and calendar details that way. Same goes for switching from one model of iPhone to another by using Apple ID.

But when switching from iOS to Android, you will need to manually get your address book and calendar from iCloud. For a switch from Android to iOS, again, simply log into your Google account and the new iOS device will do the rest.

3. Back up your apps:
Now that the critical data is secure, you need to focus on how to save and shift your apps-related data. For Android, this is possible by using any third-party software.  Saving apps-related data on iOS is even easier since all you have to do is get on to iTunes and create a full image of the phone. This will automatically secure not only the apps but all the information related to them such as updates, in-app progress etc.

4. Secure photos, music, videos etc:
You certainly don’t want to lose all those selfies you have been snapping with your smartphone camera, right? Then a simple way to shift all your media including photos, videos and music from one handset to another is to either upload it on a cloud account, such as Google Drive or iCloud. Alternatively, you can simply plug your handset with a PC using the USB port and manually shift it from your slab to your computer.

5. One final data wipe:
So you have secured all data from your smartphone? Now is the time to remove the traces of all this data from your handset so that any person who may be its new owner doesn’t get to access it. There’s a simple and effective way of doing this. Regardless of what kind of handset you own, it comes with the option of factory reset. Hit the option and wipe away everything from your smartphone. If you want to keep the data on your SD card intact, better take it out and keep it with you.

These tips will ensure that when you sell your handset this holiday season, not only will your data be secure with you, it will be completely gone from your old smartphone. Moreover, you will be able to take it all to the new smartphone without any hassles.
