Apple’s third-generation iPad could boast a display that goes way beyond full 1080p HD and apple is said to be testing 2048×1536 displays from both Samsung and LG that would finally bring a Retina display to its much-loved tablet. It is being speculated that Apple could finish testing the Retina Displays for iPad in time for the launch of the second iPad model later this year and iPad 3 will be released this year as Steve Jobs had categorically stated that 2011 is the year of iPad 2……………
Apple has reportedly begun quality testing displays from Samsung and LG, the world’s two largest manufacturers of LCD panels with the view to securing a deal to include advanced display technologies in its next-generation iPad and Apple’s next iPad device will feature a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels, way more detailed than the 1920×1080 pixel milestone of what is considered to be full HD. It is thought Apple is trying to reduce its dependency on Samsung with which it has a chequered relationship to say the least. Despite the fact that Samsung produces many of Apple’s key iDevice components (memory chips, processors, LCD screens), this didn’t stop the Cupertino-based company filing a patent complaint against the Korean giant. Quality testing of Samsung and LG’s LCDs is currently taking place at a Chinese lab. Sources state that both companies have been briefed to produce screens with improved image density and quality, and that the testing process will be produced at some stage during Q3 of this year. “Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,’’ said a source close to the talks.
Unfortunately for Samsung, though, Apple still apparently has no interest in it’s OLED screen technology. Despite the company throwing a lot of money behind it, many electronics manufacturers have been reluctant to adopt OLEDs which have a shorter lifespan and can easily become contaminated. Although it is used in some gadgets, most of them have smaller than five-inch screens due to the technology just not being advanced enough to reach the standards of LCD. “Another drawback is the current OLED technology is not at the level to realize a full HD viewing experience, which is important for tablets,’’ said the source. Samsung and LG are streets ahead when it comes to highly-advanced LCD technology, both being capable of producing high-res QXGA screens up to 9.7 inches, thanks to “advanced production technology based on the use of low temperature polysilicon,” according to the report. A deal would cement both company’s positions as Apple’s top provider of LCD technology. Its been rumored that Apple is planning to release a version of the iPad later this year which would be dubbed as the iPad 3/HD. It has been said that the new iPad will be aimed towards professionals who are craving for those extra pixels on their screen to get some serious work done.
