Internet speeds around the world have been steadily increasing over time, with the availability of better equipment, technologies and machines. However, according to a report recently published, the average global internet speeds surprisingly decreased during the last quarter of 2011.
This is quite surprising and the report, which has been published by Akamai and is titled ‘State of the Internet’ does not provide an explanation to the phenomenon. So far, the average internet speeds have been increasingly globally and even with this blip in the graph, the average speeds increased by 19 percent on the year-to-year basis.
One possibility which I can think of to explain this phenomenon can be that with internet connectivity reaching far and wide, and more and more people hooking up to the web, it may be possible that a number of developing nations are adding many such users who are still using slow internet connections.
While at one hand, these users are being added to the net mass of internet’s population, at the same time they are resulting in a drop in the average speed of the internet globally. But then, that’s just a theory.
As far as facts are concerned, South Korea and Japan have impressively topped the list, having the speediest internet connections in the world. The fastest internet speeds in US are in Boston, averaging at 8.4Mbps, but in the global arena, this city ranks 51st. Most of the cities that have the speediest internet connections are either in Japan or South Korea. The average speed in South Korea is a whooping 17.5 Mbps while that in Japan is 9.1Mbps.
