Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said at a public forum a year ago that he believed that children under 13 should be allowed to use Facebook. Facebook is also developing a technology that would allow under 13 children to use the social-networking site legally (without providing false information) under parental supervision. However, MIT Psychologist Sherry Turkle has a different opinion on Facebook’s stance for allowing under thirteen children use the service. According to the psychologist, Facebook for pre-teens is ‘agonizing’.
Although Facebook currently does not permit access to the service for children under thirteen, many children use Facebook under false pretext. To give the children legal access to the social network the company is developing a new technology. Facebook said, “We are in continuous dialogue with stakeholders, regulators and other policy makers about how best to help parents keep their kids safe in an evolving online environment”.
However, MIT Psychologist Sherry Turkle, author of Alone Together, thinks that permitting pre-teen access to the social network isn’t a good idea. According to her, it’d be better for 10-13 year old children if they spend their time in the playground rather than passing time in Facebook. She accused the service for taking “time away from being face-to-face.”
The psychologist isn’t happy with Facebook’s stand on avoiding illegitimate use of the service by pre-teens under false pre-text.She accused the service of having “a position of kind of benign tolerance.” And about the monitoring system by parents of their under 13 children’s Facebook account, she said, “I’ve done the fieldwork, parents really aren’t supervising that.”
