Facebook Tests Out Free Wi-Fi Service At Different Cafes

Facebook has been testing out a new Wi-Fi service which the social network would offer in collaboration with local businesses. The service is coupled with Facebook’s check-ins and can be availed after checking into the location offering it.

Currently, the service is in somewhat of a beta phase. The social network is providing the routers whereas the internet access is furnished by the business. Facebook is currently partnering with different cafes to test out the service.

To avail the service at a location which is offering it, a user has to log onto Facebook and check into the location they are at. They are then redirected to the Facebook page for businesses. From here, they can start using the free internet access.

Facebook had earlier confirmed that it is indeed test-running such a service. It issued a statement saying, “We are currently running a small test with a few local businesses of a Wi-Fi router that is designed to offer a quick and easy way to access free Wi-Fi after checking in on Facebook. When you access Facebook Wi-Fi by checking in, you are directed to your local business’s Facebook Page.”

Right now, Facebook is partnering with Philz Coffee in San Francisco and a number of other Palo Alto cafe locations to offer this service. We can expect the social network to roll it out to other locations in the future.
