Tumblr hasn’t been very active on the money-making front, so when folks at the company decided to add a creative version of ads and ‘sponsor products’ to finally start making money from its millions of users. Now, in a recent discussion, Tumblr’s CEO David Karp has elaborated on how advertising on Tumblr is fundamentally different from Facebook ads.
Tumblr has recently added a new ‘highlight’ feature to the website. This feature enables a user to pin any certain post to the feed of the followers by paying a nominal fee for it. We have seen similar features on other social media giants, such as Facebook and Twitter.
However, Karp staunchly holds that Tumblr’s highlight is not the same as the highlight features offered by other social networks. According to him, Tumblr is “built around creative brand advertising, which is something that Facebook and Google don’t support.” He further says, “Given that we have such a creative community. the products we’re building work well for storytelling, and we’ve tried to build them in such a way that they do scale from a big brand cutting a check for $100,000 to a person proud of their post and wants to highlight it for five dollars.”
Karp is very confident that this kind of advertising will persuade the companies as well as individuals to be more creative. Also, since the ‘highlights’ will comprise of posts preferred by people whom a user follows, he will be receiving relevant advertising. Karp says, ‘It’s troubling when an AmEx ad is inline but if it’s a friend’s link that wants to make sure you saw a big event he’s having that night, then you have a different relationship to that content.’
