We have known for a while that YouTube has been working on a paid subscription service, although the video site hasn’t launched the service yet. Now, certain sources indicate that YouTube may be on the verge of launching the service for some of the top video channels.
Paid subscription service can prove a very critical factor in sustaining YouTube’s growth in the long-run. Google has been encouraging channel-owners to produce original content for their YouTube pages. But in turn, the channel owners seem unsatisfied with the amount of money they make through ads.
A paid subscription model, on the other hand, can help YouTube channels get good value on their original content. This would also help them get adequate financial support to continue churning out such content. YouTube refused to directly comment on the recent developments on this front but did say that it was ‘looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer.’
Apparently, the paid subscription model will first be offered on the top 50 video channels and users will be able to subscribe to some of them for as little as $1.99. Over time, we can expect YouTube to offer the service across other channels, if it turns out to be a success.
