In office, a person should be identified by his/her work, not by his/her looks. But does this really really happen in every offices? Does a human looks have more impact upon other people than his/her work in office? Well a study has found that people who are considered unattractive are more likely to be belittled and bullied in the workplace.
Brent Scott, associate professor of management at Michigan State University and lead investigator on the study sought to answer the Question of Our Time: are people mean to the less attractive? Researchers surveyed 114 employees of a large hospital in the southeastern United States about how often their co-workers said hurtful things, made fun of them, or were otherwise cruel or rude. After that all those 114 workers were photographed.
Later four strangers judged the participants’ attractiveness based on digital photos. Researchers found that unattractive and disagreeable people were not treated as well as other co-workers, even after taking into account factors such as age, gender and time on the job.
The last component of the study surveyed friends or romantic partners of the workers and had them rate their worker-friend or partner in terms of friendliness. Surprisingly, researchers found that friendly people weren’t treated as poorly.
