One of the key problems for the security of airplanes, commercial and otherwise, is that they are susceptible to possible missile attacks from terrorists. A new laser system will now finally help avert this danger.
The new laser system is called MUSIC which stands for Multi-Spectral Infrared Countermeasure. The very purpose this system serves is to take on any incoming missiles without requiring the pilot to perform any specific maneuvers on the plane.
MUSIC works by detecting an incoming missile attack within seconds using its infrared sensors. It then sends a laser towards the navigation system of the incoming attack, making it go off course and either blow mid-air or hit somewhere else where damage will be minimum.
The technology has been developed by Israel in a bid to avert any possible attacks on its airplanes during take-off or while landing. C-MUSIC, a commercial version of the new security shield, has already been tested and proven to be quite effective. It remains to be seen how long the system takes to find its way into commercial airliners, not only in Israel, but around the globe.

The official version of the security system, which will be integrated into Israeli airplanes, is called SkyShield. Commenting on the performance of the system, Israel Air Force Brig. Gen. Eitan Eshel said, ‘SkyShield has been validated under the most complex and sophisticated testing conditions ever conducted in Israel and is now ready to protect Israeli airlines.’
