Now that Facebook has gone public, it is only natural that the company is looking to a more diverse and expanded business strategy so that it may be able to returns profits to its investors. Ever since the IPO, Facebook has ramped up efforts to add extra services and products to its portfolio. Now, we hear that Facebook is trying to bring together a smartphone of its own.
According to a report in New York Times, it is being said that Facebook is working on its own smartphone which will be released sometime next year. This article was filed by Nick Bilton and he claims that he has been able to discover this through a number of Facebook employees.
Interestingly enough, Bilton also claims that these employees divulged to him that Facebook had hired a number of former Apple employees to work on this phone. These include more than six such engineers who worked on the hardware as well as software of iPhone and one such engineer who worked on iPad.
Bilton wrote in his report, “One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used, he said. Another former Apple hardware engineer was recruited by a Facebook executive and was told about the company’s hardware explorations.”
However, this may as well be just a rumor, yet again. Rumors about a Facebook phone have surfaced times and again over the last one year and they have nearly always turned out to be false. But given the fact that things have changed now and Facebook is a public company, such a move would make perfect sense for Facebook.
