Sony has been rather conservative on the support it extended for file formats that are supported on Sony devices. However, it now seems that Sony is trying to change this policy and adopt support for a wider range of file formats and media files. To this end, Sony has taken a step forward with the release of its software called Homestream.
Homestream has been released as an application for both Mac and PC by Sony. Sony devices, conventionally, have been supporting just two notable formats: namely MP4 and AVI. But with the help of the new software, Sony devices can now play a whole host of new media files.
For instance, with Homestream, Sony devices can now play MOV, MKV, VOB and a number of other files types. These files can be played over a network after Homestream transcodes them.
Homestream itself is based on an open-source software which has been around and is called Serviio. As a result of this, it is quite expected that Homestream can work fairly well with a number of other DLNA clients.
The official description of Homestream on Sony’s website reads, “Homestream will share your media from your main home computer with your internet enabled living room device. Now you don’t have to copy files onto USB or have them spread over multiple computers, they are all kept in one place for everyone to use, wherever they are in the house.”
