iPhone 5 Launch Event: Tim Cook Starts With Impressive Statistics

The iPhone 5 launch event has kicked off and all of us are either glued to live stream or live blogs to listen to every single announcement by Apple. Taking the stage to commence the event, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has started off with some impressive statistics about the performance of Apple’s products.

Tim Cook

After speaking briefly about the role of Apple Stores in selling millions of Apple devices, Cook moves on to the OS X, citing that so far, seven million Mountain Lion upgrades have been sold. This is rather impressive given the fact that the Mountain Lion upgrade is not very old.

A bit eulogizing the MacBook Pro with Retina, Cook calls it the ‘best Mac we’ve ever made.’ He goes on to cite that Apple notebooks have been the top-ranked notebooks in the US market during the last three months. To be more specific, they have 27% of the overall notebook market share.

He present iPad as the hallmark of a post-PC revolution, a claim which is not wrong. According to him, Apple sold 17 million iPad tablets in the last quarter alone. Much to the chagrin of Android vendors, Cook shows that whereas iPad had 62% of the tablet market share last year, that has been bumped to 68% this year.

Moreover, he claims that iPad drives 91% of the tablet web traffic. Referring to the App Store, he calls it the ‘most vibrant app ecosystem’ which now features more than 700,000 apps. In total, Apple has crossed the mark of 400 million iOS devices sold. All these Apple statistics are indeed very impressive and Cook is very right in citing them as proud achievements. And now, he’s on to iPhone 5. But that calls for another post.
