A very interesting bug has been discovered on Mac machines. The bug affects most of the Mac apps and can crash them once you type ‘File:///’ in any of these apps. The term has to be written with a capital ‘F.’
What is even more intriguing is the fact that you don’t have to do anything else once you enter it in the app. The mere act of typing in ‘File:///’ in any app crashes it immediately. In fact, so ‘volatile’ is this bug that most tech blogs have avoided using the term directly in their posts so as to avoid crashing their Chrome or Safari browsers.
A few apps that seem able to stand it are the image-processing apps. Some have speculated that the bug is probably found in the OS X spellchecker. But that is not very likely, because Safari URL bar doesn’t support spellchecker and yet, the bug is effective in the browser too.
Moreover, the bug is specific in such Mac machines which are running the Mountain Lion build. Such machines which run the Lion or Snow Leopard iterations of the OS X remain unaffected. The best way to put up with the bug, until Apple rolls out a patch, is to simply avoid typing it in any of your Mac apps.
