Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) recently found itself in trouble when a hacker released the personal information of some 50,000 registered users of the network. The hacker claimed that this move was taken after an anti-Islam politician, Geert Wilders, was interviewed by Lateline.
The hacker who claimed the responsibility for carrying out the attack goes by the name ‘PhrozenMyst’ and stated that he was able to breach into the personal data of ABC users by hacking a website which was related to the ABC program, Making Australia Happy.
The data that has been accessed by the hacker has been posted on multiple pastebin pages. The links to these pages can be found here. The login passwords of the users are encrypted, although we can only hope that ABC used a good enough encryption method to guard the security of its users’ information.
Meanwhile, some have cited that the hacker probably belongs to the hacktivist group, Anonymous. In his pastebin posts, the hacker noted, “ABC hacked for giving a platform to Geert Wilders to spread hatred #OpWilders – database leaked.”
ABC has also issued an official statement regarding the whole incident, which reads, “This breach originated at an overseas location, and an activist has claimed responsibility for it. The ABC will be in contact with audience members who have been directly affected.”
