PSP Sale Will Be Boosted Up Because Of Apple iPad: Sony

Sony claims that their mobile gaming device, PSP sale will increase because of Apple iPad. The company said they are not concerned about the iPad sale. They are confident that iPad cannot steal their PSP customers. Last week Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told that he wasn’t not interested in iPad. Iwata dismissed Apple’s iPad, a potential DSi XL competitor. “It’s just a bigger iPod Touch,” he said of the big iPod Touch unveiled last week.

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled its highly-anticipated wireless tablet computer, dubbed the iPad. In addition to displaying books and video media, the device is designed to serve as a portable videogame player. Two game makers, Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) and Gameloft S.A. (GFT), have already been recruited.

Unlike Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata who out-and-out dismissed the iPad as a worthwhile gaming console, Koller believes that the iPad will act as a casual stepping stone from the tablet to Sony’s handheld.

Sony’s head of Playstation marketing, John Koller, told the Wall Street Journal:

“Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony…when people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.”

The Wall Street Journal says sales of Sony’s PSP have nearly tripled since June 2007 when the iPhone first launched but claiming that it’s because the iPhone launched would be a real stretch.

Isn’t it more likely that games like GTA: Chinatown Wars and hardware updates like the PSP Go have pushed PSP sales onwards? Still at least Sony haven’t dismissed the Apple iPad outright like Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata.
