KickStarter originally started out as a way of crowdsourcing funds for tech ideas but over the years, it has come to fund all sorts of cool ideas. The site has now revealed that it received $480 million in funding from the users during 2013.
That’s a huge amount of crowdsourced funds and shows that KickStarter is increasingly becoming the go-to platform for budding startups and innovators. According to the company, a whopping 3 million people pledged funds to the projects on the site during the past year.
Interestingly, these 3 million people came from 214 different countries and territories, including Antarctica. Such demographics explain that online crowdsourcing is truly a global phenomenon, bringing together innovators and customers from all over the globe.
The success statistics for completed projects are also fairly impressive. A total of 19,911 KickStarter projects were successfully funded in 2013. Moreover, a number of smashing KickStarter hits such as the Pebble smartwatch, Oculus Rift and the Ouya console finally debuted and turned from an idea into a commercial reality, made available to KickStarter backers.
Undoubtedly, 2013 was big for KickStarter in terms of entertainment-related projects. ‘Innocente‘, a movie of a 15-year old girl aspiring to be an artist, got the funds from KickStarter backers and made it to the big league, scoring an Oscar. Many other similar projects witnessed a roaring success. In all, the year 2013 was an immense success not only for KickStarter, but for innovators, artists and creative folk all over the globe.
