Looks like Sprint and Samsung are not totally giving up on the original Galaxy Tab Android tablet. After the long holiday weekend, Sprint confirmed that the 7 inch tablet will be getting a Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.
The confirmation comes only days after the rumors appeared on the web. Sprint, the 4th largest U.S. based carrier has said that the new build called GINGERBREAD.EF17 will start rolling out today, and will continue for the next four days. Aside from the obvious jump to Gingerbread, the update will also include update for HID Bluetooth, which will allow the use of Bluetooth keyboards. Samsung Galaxy Tab owners can expect to see the update anytime now, which will come as an OTA (over-the-air) update.
This is probably the last substantial update, except for the occasional maintenance update, that Galaxy Tab owners will see for their onetime popular Android tablet. I know Galaxy Tab owners are hoping for a bump up to Honeycomb, but I doubt that will happen. If by chance it does happen, it could give the Galaxy Tab a well deserved jumpstart, that it needs to compete with newer Honeycomb based Android tablets.
Again, it is highly unlikely that it will ever happen. Just the other day, we got word that the new Galaxy Tab 8.9 has cleared the FCC. But unfortunately there is also news that the release has been pushed back until mid-August.
Getting back to the current Galaxy Tab, if you want to check to see if the update is ready in your area, got the Settings Menu -> About My Galaxy Tab -> System Updates. From there you can check to see if the update is ready.
